Liposuction at Atlanta Plastic Surgery Specialists is offered as both a standalone fat reduction procedure and as a complement to other body contouring surgeries including abdominoplasty, arm lift, and thigh lift. The procedure uses a cannula — a thin hollow metal tube — inserted through small inconspicuous incisions and connected to a vacuum source, which is moved through subcutaneous fat tissue in a fanning pattern to remove localised fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones employs tumescent liposuction technique, in which a large volume of dilute anaesthetic and vasoconstrictor solution is infiltrated into the fat compartment prior to aspiration. This tumescent infiltration substantially reduces operative blood loss, provides prolonged post-operative local anaesthesia, and allows more precise fat removal by firming the tissue. Liposuction is most effective for patients near their goal weight who have good skin elasticity — it removes fat volume but does not address skin excess. For patients with significant skin laxity in addition to fat excess, liposuction is typically combined with a skin excision procedure such as an abdominoplasty, arm lift (brachioplasty), thigh lift, or body lift depending on the affected area. Common treatment zones include the abdomen and lower abdomen, flanks (love handles), inner and outer thighs, hips and buttocks, upper arms, back (bra rolls and flanks), inner knees, and the neck and submental area for double chin contour. Multiple areas can typically be addressed in a single anaesthetic session. Recovery involves wearing compression garments for four to six weeks, bruising and swelling in the treated areas for two to four weeks, and continued contour improvement as residual swelling resolves over three to six months.
