The Geelong Bone Density Department at Barwon Health's University Hospital Geelong campus is one of the highest-volume public DEXA bone densitometry services in regional Victoria, Australia. Operating from the Douglas Hocking Research Institute within the University Hospital Geelong precinct at Entrance 3 on Bellerine Street, the department runs three dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanners staffed by accredited bone density technologists and supported by on-site endocrinologists who provide specialist interpretation and clinical support. The department performs more than 6,000 DEXA scans per year, reflecting the substantial demand for bone health assessment across the Greater Geelong region and the Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, and Colac Otway communities served by Barwon Health. DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the gold-standard method for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and hip — the key clinical test for diagnosing osteoporosis and osteopenia, stratifying fracture risk, and monitoring response to osteoporosis treatments such as bisphosphonates, denosumab, and teriparatide. The scan is quick (typically 10 to 20 minutes), exposes patients to a very low dose of radiation (far lower than a chest X-ray), and generates a T-score comparing the patient's BMD against the young-adult reference population. Results are used by GPs and endocrinologists to guide clinical decisions on preventive lifestyle interventions, calcium and vitamin D supplementation, and pharmacological therapy. The department also participates in osteoporosis pharmaceutical clinical trials, making it a research-active service. A GP referral is required for DEXA. Medicare rebates apply for eligible referrals under the MBS, meaning out-of-pocket costs are typically low or nil for qualifying patients. Appointments are available Monday to Friday by calling (03) 4215 1130.
