Liposuction and SmartLipo (laser-assisted liposuction) to remove stubborn localised fat deposits from the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, neck, and double chin. Liposuction at Boston Plastic Surgery Specialists was offered as a targeted body contouring procedure to remove localised fat deposits that persist despite diet and exercise — areas such as the abdomen, flanks, hips, inner and outer thighs, knees, arms, back, and the submental area (double chin). Dr. Brooke R. Seckel offered both conventional suction-assisted liposuction (SAL) and SmartLipo — a laser-assisted liposuction technique in which a thin laser fibre is inserted through the same small access incisions used in traditional liposuction. The laser energy delivered through the fibre serves two purposes: it heats and liquefies the fat cells, making them easier to aspirate with less mechanical disruption and potentially reducing bruising and recovery; and it delivers controlled thermal energy to the undersurface of the overlying skin, stimulating collagen contraction and tightening — a particular advantage in areas where skin laxity is a concurrent concern, such as the inner arms and inner thighs. The SmartLipo technique was developed and extensively studied in the early 2000s, and Dr. Seckel was an early adopter of the technology, incorporating it as a key component of his body contouring service. The procedure is performed under either local anaesthesia with intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia depending on the extent of the area treated and the patient's preference. Post-operative compression garments are worn for four to six weeks. Liposuction was frequently offered as a component of the mommy makeover procedure and combined with abdominoplasty for patients seeking both skin removal and fat contouring of the abdomen. Chin and jowl liposuction for men seeking facial contouring without full facelift was also offered. The practice closed permanently in September 2023.
