Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Upper and lower blepharoplasty by Dr. Theresa Jarmuz to address hooded upper eyelids, redundant upper eyelid skin, under-eye bags, and festooning from herniated orbital fat. Surgery is performed in the practice's AAAHC-accredited in-office suite under local anesthesia with sedation. Addresses both functional visual field obstruction from ptotic upper eyelids and cosmetic concerns from periocular ageing.

Buckhead Facial Plastic Surgery performs blepharoplasty — surgical eyelid rejuvenation — as one of Dr. Theresa Jarmuz's core surgical procedures, consistent with the fellowship training she completed that concentrated exclusively on the nose, eyes, face, head, and neck. Upper blepharoplasty addresses excess skin accumulation in the upper eyelid that produces the hooded or heavy-lidded appearance associated with facial ageing; in more advanced cases this redundant tissue can overhang the lash line and create a functional visual field obstruction, qualifying the procedure for partial insurance coverage in documented cases. Upper blepharoplasty incisions are placed within the natural upper eyelid crease, rendering the scar invisible when the eye is open. Redundant orbicularis oculi muscle and herniated pre-aponeurotic fat may also be addressed at the same operative session depending on individual anatomy. Lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags caused by prolapse of the intraorbital fat through a weakened orbital septum — fat pads that produce three distinct bulges in the lower eyelid contour. Depending on the patient's anatomy, Dr. Jarmuz may approach lower blepharoplasty via the transconjunctival route (incision placed inside the lower eyelid, leaving no external scar) when skin excess is minimal and fat reduction or repositioning is the primary goal, or via the subciliary approach (external incision just below the lower lash line) when concurrent skin tightening or resurfacing is indicated. Fat repositioning — redistributing prolapsed orbital fat into the tear trough depression rather than simply excising it — avoids the hollowed appearance that can result from over-aggressive fat removal and produces a more youthful lower eyelid–cheek junction. Upper and lower blepharoplasty may be performed together or separately depending on the patient's individual anatomy and goals. Blepharoplasty is commonly combined with brow lift when forehead and upper face descent is contributing to the eyelid appearance, or with facelift for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Recovery involves bruising and swelling that typically resolve within ten to fourteen days.
