Upper and lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) performed by Dr Jayson Oates (MBBS, FRACS) at Academy Face and Body in Subiaco, Perth. Upper blepharoplasty removes excess skin causing hooded or heavy eyelids; lower blepharoplasty addresses under-eye bags, puffiness, and festoons. Both can be performed simultaneously for comprehensive periorbital rejuvenation.
Blepharoplasty — surgical eyelid rejuvenation — is offered at Academy Face and Body, Subiaco, Perth by Dr Jayson Oates, specialist Otolaryngologist and Head and Neck Surgeon. As the face ages, the delicate periorbital skin stretches, orbital fat herniates forward, and the levator muscle weakens, producing the appearance of heavy, hooded upper eyelids and under-eye puffiness or bags that patients commonly report makes them look older, more tired, or less alert than they feel. Upper blepharoplasty removes the excess skin and, where appropriate, a small amount of underlying orbicularis oculi muscle and herniated orbital fat from the medial fat pad of the upper lid — the incision is placed within the natural upper lid crease so the resulting scar is concealed in the fold. In cases where there is also true eyelid ptosis (drooping due to levator weakness), Dr Oates may perform a combined blepharoplasty and ptosis correction in the same procedure. Lower blepharoplasty addresses the infraorbital puffiness, hollowing, tear trough deformity, and skin laxity of the lower lid. It can be performed via an external transcutaneous approach (incision just below the lash line) or a transconjunctival approach (incision inside the lid — no external scar) depending on whether skin removal or fat redistribution alone is needed. Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty is frequently requested for comprehensive periorbital rejuvenation and can be performed at the same operation. In Australia, upper blepharoplasty may attract a Medicare rebate component when the excess skin causes a functional visual field obstruction documented by a visual field test — a consideration worth raising at consultation. Surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. Recovery involves bruising and swelling that typically resolves within two to three weeks. GP referral required; pricing disclosed at consultation at the Subiaco, Perth rooms.
