LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light — typically red (633 nm) for anti-inflammatory and collagen-stimulating effects, and blue (415 nm) for antibacterial action against Propionibacterium acnes in active acne — delivered via an LED panel in comfortable, non-thermal sessions suitable for all skin types with no downtime. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) takes LED activation a step further by first applying a topical photosensitising agent (such as aminolevulinic acid) to the treatment area; the agent selectively concentrates in abnormal cells including acne-producing sebaceous glands, pre-cancerous actinic keratoses, and certain pigmented lesions before light activation generates reactive oxygen species that selectively destroy the target tissue. PDT is one of few treatments in Australia with evidence-based efficacy for both recalcitrant acne and pre-cancerous sun damage lesions in a single modality.
