Microneedling

Type

Microneedling

Duration

1 hour

Microneedling at Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute stimulates the skin's natural collagen and elastin production by creating controlled micro-channels in the dermis using fine needles. Used to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, minimize enlarged pores, and address acne scarring. Administered by board-certified dermatologists at the Coconut Grove clinic.

Microneedling (collagen induction therapy) at Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute uses a motorized microneedling device to create precise, controlled micro-punctures in the epidermis and superficial dermis across the treatment area. These micro-injuries — typically 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm in depth depending on the target concern and skin location — trigger the skin's wound-healing cascade: platelets aggregate at the injury site and release growth factors including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF), which stimulate fibroblast proliferation and activation. Activated fibroblasts produce new collagen (primarily types I and III) and elastin fibers, gradually replacing the treated zone with reorganized, denser dermal matrix over a healing period of four to six weeks following each session. Clinically, this collagen induction effect improves skin texture roughness, reduces the depth and width of atrophic acne scars, minimizes enlarged pores, and decreases the appearance of fine surface lines. The micro-channels created during treatment also transiently increase dermal permeability by 400–800 fold, enabling significantly enhanced penetration of topical actives — hyaluronic acid serums, vitamin C, peptide complexes, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) — applied immediately post-needling. When combined with PRP application, the growth factors delivered by activated platelets synergize with the mechanically induced healing response for accelerated collagen remodeling outcomes. At Miami Dermatology & Laser Institute, microneedling is performed under the supervision of board-certified dermatologists, with topical anesthetic applied before treatment to ensure patient comfort. A standard course consists of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, with visible improvement in skin quality typically noted from the second session onward.
