Hair loss is a complex condition with many potential causes, and accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of effective treatment. At Eileen Tan Skin Laser and Hair Transplant Clinic, the hair loss consultation is led personally by Dr. Eileen Tan — a FAMS-accredited dermatologist with specialist expertise in hair and nail disorders spanning over 30 years. During the initial consultation, Dr. Tan conducts a thorough clinical interview covering diet and nutrition, recent medications and supplements (particularly those taken in the past six months), family history of hair loss, recent illnesses or surgeries, and hair care practices. For women, a focused hormonal history is taken encompassing menstrual patterns, pregnancies, and menopausal status. Following the history, a detailed physical examination of the scalp and hair is performed. Where appropriate, diagnostic investigations are ordered, including a trichogram (microscopic analysis of pulled hair to assess follicle health and growth cycle), blood tests to rule out nutritional deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, autoimmune markers, and hormonal imbalances, and scalp biopsy for histopathological examination in complex or ambiguous cases. Once a diagnosis is established, a customised treatment plan is developed. Options may include topical and oral medical therapies, low-level laser light therapy using the NuHair FDA-approved LLLT system, local corticosteroid injections for alopecia areata, immunotherapy for chronic alopecia areata, and referral for hair transplantation where appropriate.
