The mechanism of photobiomodulation is based on the absorption of these wavelengths by cytochrome c oxidase — the terminal enzyme of the mitochondrial electron transport chain — within skin cells. This absorption accelerates the electron transfer rate in the mitochondrial respiratory chain, increasing the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's universal energy currency.
