A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown combines a strong metal substructure with a tooth-coloured porcelain outer layer, restoring a damaged tooth with a balance of durability and a natural look. The metal core gives the crown strength that suits back teeth and bridge work, while the porcelain provides an acceptable colour match. The practice offers crowns on a steel or gold base as a robust, more economical alternative to all-ceramic options, with a temporary crown fitted while the final one is made.
A porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crown is a long-established way to restore a tooth that needs full coverage. It is built on a thin metal coping for strength, over which dental porcelain is layered to give a tooth-coloured surface. The metal substructure makes PFM crowns hard-wearing and well suited to molars, which take heavy chewing forces, and to supporting bridges where extra strength is valuable. At Gabinety 51 the metal base can be standard dental steel or, for patients who prefer it, gold, with the gold priced separately according to weight. The treatment usually takes two visits. At the first, the dentist removes any decay and shapes the tooth to make room for the crown, takes an impression and fits a temporary acrylic crown so the tooth is protected and usable while the laboratory works. At the second visit the finished crown is tried in, adjusted for a comfortable bite and accurate fit, and then cemented in place. PFM crowns offer a dependable combination of strength and appearance at a lower cost than all-ceramic crowns, though a fine metal margin can sometimes be visible at the gumline over time, which is why all-ceramic options may be preferred for front teeth. The dentist will help you choose between PFM, all-ceramic and gold-based crowns based on the tooth's position, function and your budget and aesthetic priorities, and will advise on any build-up or post the tooth may need first.
