Once the tumescent solution has taken effect, a small cannula — a thin hollow tube — is inserted through a discreet access incision and advanced in a fanning pattern through the fat layer. Negative pressure from a suction device attached to the cannula aspirates the emulsified fat as the cannula is moved back and forth.
