MRI of abdomen for liver, kidneys, and abdominal organs.
An abdominal MRI provides detailed images of the organs within the abdomen, including the liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, and surrounding structures. MRI is particularly valuable for liver imaging because it can characterize tissue composition — distinguishing between fluid, fat, iron deposition, and fibrosis without invasive biopsy. Specialized sequences such as in-phase/opposed-phase imaging detect fatty infiltration, while elastography sequences can estimate liver stiffness (a marker of fibrosis). For the kidneys, MRI can characterize masses and evaluate the renal collecting system. Abdominal MRI is often preferred over CT for follow-up imaging because it avoids cumulative radiation exposure while providing comparable or superior soft-tissue detail.
Key Details
Who Is This For?
Anyone with elevated liver enzymes or concerns about fatty liver disease who wants non-invasive assessment. People wanting a thorough evaluation of abdominal organs as part of a health screening. Those with kidney findings on ultrasound that need further characterization. Individuals with a family history of liver, kidney, or pancreatic conditions. People who want to avoid the radiation exposure associated with abdominal CT.
What's Included
Preparation Required
Fast for 4–6 hours before the scan to reduce bowel motion and improve image quality. Drink water normally unless instructed otherwise. Remove all metal objects. Inform the facility of any implants or metal fragments. If contrast is used, ensure you have had recent kidney function blood work (eGFR). Arrive 15–20 minutes early for safety screening. You may be asked to hold your breath for short intervals during the scan to reduce motion artifacts.
