CT scan of head for trauma, stroke, and neurological conditions.
A CT (computed tomography) scan uses a rotating X-ray beam and advanced computer processing to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body. CT scans are exceptionally fast — most studies complete in under 10 minutes — and provide excellent visualization of bones, blood vessels, and dense tissues. Modern multi-detector CT scanners can acquire hundreds of image slices in a single breath hold, enabling high-resolution 3D reconstructions. CT is the imaging modality of choice for coronary artery calcium scoring (a powerful predictor of cardiovascular risk), lung cancer screening (low-dose CT), and rapid evaluation of acute conditions. While CT does use ionizing radiation, modern protocols have dramatically reduced doses, and the diagnostic value typically far outweighs the minimal radiation risk for indicated studies.
Key Details
Who Is This For?
Adults over 40 seeking a coronary artery calcium score for cardiovascular risk stratification. Current or former heavy smokers eligible for low-dose CT lung screening. Anyone needing rapid, high-resolution imaging of bones, chest, or vascular structures. People who cannot undergo MRI due to implants, claustrophobia, or other contraindications. Those seeking fast, definitive imaging for acute symptoms.
What's Included
Preparation Required
For studies with IV contrast: fast for 4 hours beforehand and ensure recent kidney function blood work (creatinine/eGFR) is available. Stay well hydrated. Inform the facility of any contrast allergies, kidney disease, diabetes medications (especially metformin), or pregnancy. Remove metal objects from the scan area. For coronary calcium scoring, no contrast is needed. Wear comfortable clothing. Most CT scans are very fast (5–15 minutes on the table), but arrive 15 minutes early for registration.
