Hair transplant surgery has two fundamental components: extraction of follicular units from the permanent donor zone at the back and sides of the scalp, and transplantation of those follicles into recipient sites in the areas of thinning or hair loss. The NeoGraft device uses pneumatic pressure (rather than manual punch rotation) to extract individual follicular units of one to four hairs with minimal transaction rates — transaction being the inadvertent cutting of the follicle during harvest, which makes it non-viable for transplantation. The extracted follicles are collected in a chilled holding solution and then implanted into tiny recipient incisions made in the recipient area according to a natural-appearing hairline design and density distribution plan. The primary advantage of FUE over the older strip FUT (follicular unit transplantation) technique is the absence of a linear donor scar — instead, tiny circular punch scars approximately 0.8–1.0 mm in diameter heal with minimal visible trace, allowing patients to wear their hair short without concealing a linear scar. Recovery is characterised by mild redness and scabbing at both donor and recipient zones, resolving within one to two weeks; transplanted hairs shed at two to three weeks (a normal phase of the transplant cycle) before re-growing permanently from four to twelve months.
