Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing uses carbon dioxide laser energy delivered in a fractionated microscopic column pattern across the skin surface. Each column creates a micro-ablative zone of controlled thermal injury through the epidermis and into the papillary and reticular dermis, stimulating a robust wound-healing response: collagen remodelling, new elastin synthesis, and epidermal regeneration over a recovery period of five to ten days for full-coverage fractional treatment. This produces significant improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, uneven texture, enlarged pores, and photodamage. Ablative fractional CO2 is particularly well-suited to patients with notable photoageing who can tolerate a one-week social downtime for a meaningful single-session improvement. Fraxel laser uses a non-ablative to mildly ablative 1550 nm or 1927 nm erbium-fibre wavelength to create sub-surface thermal zones without removing the epidermis as a continuous layer — the upper skin remains largely intact as a biological dressing, resulting in a shorter recovery of two to five days per session.
