Accurately assess your iron levels with One Day Tests' Iron Blood Test.
The Iron Blood Test from One Day Tests is an essential diagnostic tool for evaluating your body's iron levels, which are critical for numerous bodily functions, including the production of red blood cells and oxygen transport. Imbalances in iron levels can lead to various health issues, such as fatigue and weakness in the case of deficiency, or organ damage if there is an overload. This test provides a detailed analysis of your iron status by measuring serum iron, ferritin, and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) in your blood. Conducted in a CQC-accredited laboratory, the Iron Blood Test offers a prompt and precise assessment, with results usually returned within 24 hours. It is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing symptoms related to iron imbalance, those with conditions affecting iron absorption, or anyone interested in a thorough check of their iron health.
Key Details
Who Is This For?
Anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, weakness, dizziness, or shortness of breath. Women with heavy menstrual periods, who are at higher risk of iron deficiency. Athletes and endurance sports participants, who lose iron through sweat and foot-strike hemolysis. Vegetarians and vegans who may not get enough dietary iron. People with a family history of hemochromatosis (hereditary iron overload).
What's Included
Preparation Required
Fasting for 10–12 hours before your appointment is recommended for accurate results (water is fine). Avoid alcohol for 24 hours and intense exercise for 12 hours before the blood draw. Morning appointments are ideal for consistent hormone and glucose readings. The blood draw typically takes 5–10 minutes.
Biomarkers Tested
4A mineral essential for oxygen transport (in hemoglobin), energy production, and immune function. Serum iron measures the amount circulating in blood, but ferritin and TIBC provide a more complete picture of iron status.
The primary iron storage protein. Ferritin reflects total body iron stores and is the first marker to drop in iron deficiency. However, ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection, and liver disease, which can mask true iron deficiency.
Transferrin is a protein that binds and transports iron in the blood. Abnormal levels can indicate iron metabolism disorders.
A protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation. CRP rises rapidly during infection, injury, or inflammatory conditions. It's a general marker — elevated CRP signals inflammation but doesn't pinpoint the source.
