Professional dental hygiene (preventive oral hygiene therapy) involves the removal of mineralised plaque deposits (calculus/tartar) from tooth surfaces and below the gumline using ultrasonic scalers and hand instruments, followed by polishing to remove surface staining and smooth enamel surfaces to slow future plaque accumulation.
