Magnetic resonance angiography with contrast (carotid, aortic imaging).
MR angiography (MRA) is a non-invasive imaging technique that visualizes blood vessels throughout the body using MRI technology. Unlike conventional catheter angiography, MRA does not require arterial puncture or catheter placement, making it significantly safer and more comfortable. The study can be performed with or without gadolinium contrast — time-of-flight (TOF) sequences can image flowing blood without any contrast injection. MRA is commonly used to evaluate the arteries of the brain (Circle of Willis), neck (carotid arteries), chest (aorta), abdomen (renal arteries), and legs (peripheral vasculature). It can reveal narrowing, dilation, malformations, or occlusions of blood vessels with high accuracy.
Key Details
Who Is This For?
Anyone with a family history of aneurysms, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease. People with risk factors for atherosclerosis including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, or smoking history. Those experiencing symptoms suggestive of vascular insufficiency such as leg pain with walking, transient neurological symptoms, or pulsatile masses. Individuals seeking a non-invasive vascular assessment as part of comprehensive health screening.
What's Included
Preparation Required
Remove all metal objects including jewelry, watches, belts, and hair clips before the scan. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing without metal fasteners — you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Inform the facility in advance if you have any implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, or metal fragments in your body. Arrive 15–20 minutes early to complete a safety screening questionnaire. If contrast dye is required, you may be asked to fast for 4 hours beforehand. Inform your technologist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney concerns.
