A medically supervised GLP-1 receptor agonist weight management programme using semaglutide or liraglutide. Suitable for overweight or obese men and for those managing type 2 diabetes, with regular monitoring and lifestyle support included.
Pulse Clinic Singapore's GLP-1 weight management programme offers medically supervised access to glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists for patients with obesity or excess weight, including those with associated metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome. GLP-1 receptor agonists work by mimicking the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1, which is released after eating. They slow gastric emptying, reduce appetite and increase satiety signals to the brain, leading to a significant and sustained reduction in caloric intake. Clinical trials have demonstrated that semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy) can achieve an average of 15% body weight reduction over 68 weeks, with some patients losing considerably more. At Pulse Clinic, the programme begins with a medical consultation to assess eligibility. The doctor takes a full history including current weight, BMI, previous weight loss attempts, medications and any contraindications to GLP-1 therapy (such as personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2). Baseline blood tests including fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipids, liver enzymes, thyroid function and a full blood count are ordered to establish the metabolic picture and monitor for changes during treatment. The clinic offers oral semaglutide (Rybelsus — the only orally available GLP-1 agonist currently registered in Singapore) as well as liraglutide (Saxenda/Victoza) for weight management. Injectable semaglutide availability may be subject to supply constraints in Singapore, where the Ministry of Health has prioritised allocation to restructured hospitals for diabetes patients; the clinic advises on current availability at time of consultation. Dosing follows a slow titration protocol to minimise gastrointestinal side effects — nausea and mild diarrhoea are the most common complaints, especially in the first four to eight weeks, and the majority of patients find they resolve as the body adapts. Follow-up appointments at four to six weeks assess tolerability, weight trend and any side effects, with dose escalation guided by response. The programme includes dietary and lifestyle counselling, recognising that GLP-1 agonists are most effective when combined with a moderate caloric deficit and increased physical activity.
