Facelift surgery at Rady Rahban MD, Beverly Hills addresses the anatomical changes of facial aging that cannot be effectively corrected by non-invasive means: gravitational descent of the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) and the ligamentous structures that anchor it to the facial skeleton, leading to jowling along the mandibular border, loss of the youthful ogee curve of the mid-face, deepening of the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and blunting of the cervicomental angle as neck skin and platysmal bands lose support. Dr. Rahban's preferred technique is the deep plane facelift, a more advanced and anatomically correct approach than the traditional SMAS plication or imbrication: the dissection plane passes deep to the SMAS layer and releases the key retaining ligaments — the zygomatic cutaneous, masseteric cutaneous, and mandibular ligaments — that tether the descended tissue. By releasing these ligaments and repositioning the entire composite flap of SMAS, sub-SMAS fat, and overlying skin as a unit, the deep plane technique produces a three-dimensional elevation that restores the mid-face and jawline to their youthful position without placing excessive tension on the skin surface. The result is characteristically natural: the skin is redraped with minimal tension, reducing the risk of visible scarring, distortion of the hairline, or the 'swept' appearance associated with skin-only procedures. For patients with early jowling and mild skin laxity who are not yet candidates for a full deep plane procedure, Dr. Rahban performs the mini facelift through shorter incisions confined to the temporal and pre-auricular hairline, with limited SMAS work and faster recovery of approximately one week. Facelift surgery is frequently combined with neck lift (platysmaplasty) to address platysmal banding and submental fat, with brow lift to raise a descended lateral brow, with fat transfer for restoration of mid-face volume, or with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) when periorbital aging is a coexisting concern. All facelift procedures at Rady Rahban MD are performed at the on-site AAAASF-accredited surgery center. Dressings are removed the day after surgery; most patients are comfortable in social settings within one to three weeks; and the final refined result — after resolution of minor swelling — is visible at six to twelve months.
