Smartlipo is a minimally invasive laser-assisted body contouring procedure developed by Deka (marketed in the US by Cynosure) that uses a small-diameter laser fibre inserted through a micro-incision to deliver 1064 nm or 1320 nm Nd:YAG laser energy directly into the subcutaneous fat layer before aspiration. The laser energy disrupts the fat cell membranes (adipocyte photothermolysis), liquefying the fat into an emulsified state that can be aspirated through a smaller cannula than traditional liposuction requires. The laser energy simultaneously coagulates small blood vessels in the treatment zone, reducing intraoperative bleeding and post-procedure bruising compared to standard tumescent liposuction.
