PRP Hair Restoration at StudioMD uses platelet-rich plasma derived from the patient's own blood to deliver a concentrated dose of growth factors directly to the scalp in areas experiencing thinning or miniaturisation. The procedure begins with a blood draw of approximately 20 to 30 ml; the sample is then centrifuged in a calibrated process that separates the blood into its components — red blood cells (heaviest), platelet-poor plasma (lightest), and the buffy coat/PRP layer (intermediate), which contains platelets at a concentration two to seven times above baseline whole blood levels. This PRP fraction is harvested and activated (typically via calcium chloride or by the injection process itself), releasing the alpha-granule contents of the platelets: platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and fibronectin. These growth factors are associated in research with supporting the hair follicle's dermal papilla cells — the specialised fibroblasts at the base of the follicle that govern follicle size, anagen duration, and keratinocyte proliferation in the hair matrix. The PRP is injected in a grid pattern across the thinning scalp zone at a depth of approximately 3 to 4 mm using a fine needle. A course of three initial monthly sessions is commonly recommended, followed by maintenance treatments every three to six months.
