A complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most commonly ordered blood tests and provides a broad overview of your overall health. It measures the concentration and characteristics of three major cell types in your blood: red blood cells (which carry oxygen), white blood cells (which fight infection), and platelets (which help with clotting). The test includes hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC), and a white blood cell differential that breaks down the five types of white cells.
