Nutrition Consultation
Duration
1 hour
Personalised nutrition counselling delivered by a registered dietitian, covering caloric targets, macronutrient balance, meal planning, metabolic rate estimation, and dietary strategies tailored to weight management goals and medical conditions such as diabetes, PCOS, and dyslipidaemia.
The Registered Dietitian Nutrition Consultation at The Metabolic Clinic provides evidence-based, personalised dietary counselling as a standalone service or as part of an integrated weight management programme. The clinic's dietitians hold recognised qualifications accredited by the Singapore Dietetic Association (SDA) and have specialist experience in weight management, metabolic disease, and medical nutrition therapy. The initial session (60 minutes) begins with a comprehensive dietary history assessment covering habitual food intake, meal timing, hydration habits, food preferences and aversions, cultural and religious dietary requirements, cooking ability and food access, and eating behaviours including emotional eating, nighttime eating, and binge patterns. A 3-day food diary review is often incorporated to establish accurate baseline intake. Based on this intake, the dietitian calculates personalised energy targets using validated predictive equations (Harris-Benedict, Mifflin-St Jeor) corrected for activity level and adjusted for the patient's weight loss rate goal (typically 0.5–1.0 kg per week for safe, sustainable loss). Macronutrient targets are then set — generally prioritising adequate protein intake (1.2–1.6 g/kg ideal body weight) to preserve lean muscle mass during caloric restriction, appropriate fat composition to support hormonal health, and carbohydrate distribution timed to optimise insulin sensitivity. For patients on GLP-1 pharmacotherapy, the dietitian provides specific guidance on managing appetite suppression — including strategies to ensure adequate nutrient density and protein intake when overall food volumes decrease, preventing micronutrient deficiencies, and avoiding muscle mass loss. This is particularly important for older patients and those with reduced activity levels. For patients with diabetes or pre-diabetes, nutrition therapy focuses on glycaemic index and glycaemic load management, carbohydrate counting, and meal composition to blunt postprandial glucose spikes. For PCOS patients, low-glycaemic and anti-inflammatory dietary patterns are applied. For those with dyslipidaemia, the Mediterranean dietary pattern is adapted to the Singapore food environment. Meal plans are practical and culturally appropriate for Singapore's hawker centre, food court, and home-cooking contexts — ensuring patients can follow recommendations in daily life rather than theoretical ideal conditions. Follow-up sessions (30 minutes) review progress, address barriers, and adjust plans as body weight and metabolic markers change.
