The procedure begins with a standard blood draw from the patient's arm; the collected blood is then placed in a specialized centrifuge that separates the blood components by density, isolating the platelet-rich plasma layer from the red blood cells and platelet-poor plasma. The concentrated PRP contains a high density of platelets — typically four to six times the baseline platelet count found in whole blood — along with the growth factors they carry, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). Following scalp preparation with a topical numbing agent, the PRP is injected across the treatment areas using a multi-injection technique, targeting the mid-dermis at follicle depth across zones of thinning — typically the crown and frontal hairline for androgenetic alopecia patterns. The growth factor release from the concentrated platelets is associated with support for follicle health, improved blood supply to the dermal papilla, and potential extension of the anagen (active growth) phase of the hair cycle.
