Comprehensive Weight Management Programme

Type

Weight Management

Duration

2 hours

A structured, multidisciplinary weight management programme combining dietary counselling, exercise therapy, behavioural support, medical therapies, and — where clinically appropriate — endoscopic or surgical interventions for adult obesity.

The NUH COMS weight management programme is designed for adults with obesity (BMI ≥27.5 with comorbidities, or BMI ≥32.5) who have not achieved adequate results through lifestyle changes alone. The programme begins with a comprehensive assessment by the multidisciplinary team — including a surgeon, dietitian, physiotherapist, psychologist, and relevant specialists such as an endocrinologist or hepatologist — to evaluate metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, and psychosocial readiness. Non-surgical pathways include structured dietary counselling tailored to individual caloric targets and macronutrient needs, supervised exercise programming, and cognitive-behavioural support for eating behaviours and weight maintenance. Medical therapies such as GLP-1 receptor agonists or other appetite-regulating medications may be prescribed where appropriate. For patients who meet clinical criteria, endoscopic options such as the intragastric balloon offer a non-surgical bridge to greater weight loss, while bariatric surgery — sleeve gastrectomy or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass — is offered to those with BMI ≥37.5, or ≥32.5 with uncontrolled comorbidities. Post-operative follow-up is integrated into the programme, with long-term nutritional monitoring and psychological support provided to support durable outcomes. The centre treats obesity-associated conditions including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnoea, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), and subfertility, with documented improvements across these metabolic markers following intervention.
